UMES STEM Educator Brad Hartle shows Good Morning Delmarva marker Chromatography

WMDT – Brad Hartle visited Good Morning Delmarva to show another kid friendly science experiment you can try at home!

This morning, he taught Jake and Jordie about Marker Chromatography!

Brad says it’s a really simple experiment that only requires washable markers, rice paper, a paper towel or coffee filter.

He tells us the chemical effect is best seen on rice paper.

The marker’s pigments will separate as the water moves up the paper.

Brad says this occurs because companies use a multitude of pigments to create their colors.

To learn more about this experiment and how you can try it at home, watch the full video.

Here’s step-by-step directions for how to conduct the activity.
