Foodie Friday: Bountiful Bowls
LEWES, Del. – The summer heat is on, and for this edition of Foodie Friday, we’re checking out the perfect place to cool off.
Healthy Choices, Happy Hearts
Bountiful Bowls is owned by Chelsea Mahon, who is on a mission to bring tasty and healthy eats to Lewes. “When you are part of the process from the ground up, it tends to taste better. And, I always say you can feel the love in the food,” she said.
It all started with Mahon’s own struggles with food sensitivities and health challenges.
“I just started making all my food,” Chelsea explained. “So, that kind of sets the foundation for the business, and it helps because there are a lot of people who come to find that they have food allergies and sensitivities.”
Amazing Açaí
Chelsea’s açaí bowls aren’t you’re typical treats. She uses organic açaí and maqui to make a housemade base.
“And then we add it with wild blueberries, banana, almond milk,” Chelsea said. “We actually add a little cinnamon because it has a lot of health benefits. And then, we blend it and put it through an ice cream machine.”
Sunrise Bowl
The sunrise bowl is a customer favorite. It features that amazing açaí base, banana, strawberry, pineapple, granola, and a generous drizzle of local honey.
“This is like a sorbet texture, and I love, love, love it,” Foodie Friday Host Hannah Cechini said. “It is so refreshing. The flavor is very subtle. It just carries all the other fresh fruit flavors. I really love the granola on top of it. It adds a nice crunch… And the local honey, oh my gosh, it is so good.”
Rainbow Bowl
Foodie Photog Mike is trying out the rainbow bowl, which is like the sunrise, but with the addition of blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, and kiwi.
“The fruit is super fresh. That pineapple is at the peak of ripeness,” Mike said. “Kiwi, as always, does not disappoint… Blueberries and blackberries – the height of summer – great development on those. Just nice and subtly sweet.”
Chelsea’s Chicken Salad
It’s not just the fruit that’s fantastic. Be sure to try out Chelsea’s chicken salad, as well.
“The pieces of chicken are nice, big chunks,” said Hannah. “And also, the chicken has been very well-cooked. It’s tender, but the thing that makes this shine is that it’s also really well-seasoned. There are a lot of different layers of flavor in here.”
Sweet Sorcery
Chelsea truly shows us the magic of cooking, though, with the sweet stuff—one offering: a chickpea blondie.
“It just has a nice, subtle sweetness, which I think, as Americans, we are a little heavy-handed with the sugar in pastries. This really does not need a lot, and it’s nice and moist,” Mike mused. “It gives me all the things I want in a dessert pastry. The texture is great.”
Want to try another bit of sorcery? Chelsea has devised a Snickers made from dates, nuts, chocolate, and natural peanut butter.
“The date is such a good choice to transform into a Snickers because it has that natural sweetness, but it almost has the exact same texture as a normal Snickers,” said Hannah. “This is really, really cool, and definitely a must-try if you visit.”
