Free summer camp program for children with down syndrome

DELAWARE,- The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware will be holding its 14 annual days of summer camp across the first state.

This is a free one-week summer camp is offered to children with Down Syndrome between the ages of 3 and 13, and their siblings between the ages of 3 and 20.

The camp will be offered at 3 locations across the state including local sites such as Milton and Magnolia.

Lauren Camp Gates the executive director of the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware gave us some insight on what kind of activities families can expect at camp.

Camp Gates says “We have planned activities that include things like tie-dyeing and horseback riding we have arts and crafts we have soccer but we really keep the week jammed packed with different activities for the kids to participate in.”

Camp Gates also says “What’s unique about the camp is each child regardless of if they have a sibling or they are someone with Down syndrome they have a one-on-one buddy which is a volunteer teenager or a young adult who works with them throughout the week. We also have a nurse on sight and a teacher.”

This year’s Days of Summer Camp will run from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Milton Office from June 24th to the 28th and at the David E. Robinson Elementary School in Kent County from July 15th to the 19th.
