Foodie Friday: The Christmas Sweet

POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – We may be heading into summer, but we’re chowing down on some Christmas delights for this edition of Foodie Friday. The Christmas Sweet in Pocomoke City draws people from all over Delmarva with its tasty treats and heavenly hot chocolate.

Baking Perfect Buns

Owner Lisa Taylor is particularly adept at her devotion to dough, which would be pecan sticky buns.

“I like to be creative with food,” Lisa said. “So, I’ll start with the basic recipe, and then try different things with it to see if I can make it better, or maybe a different flavor.”

These sticky buns start with the homemade caramel. Lisa melts butter, and “Once it’s good a soft, we’re going to add brown sugar to it,” she said. “Give it a good stir.”

The caramel mixture cooks for about two minutes, until it comes to a boil. Lisa adds in kosher salt, maple syrup, vanilla, and cream. And that star of the sticky bun, pecans.

“Once this is good and mixed, you’re just going to pour the whole amount into the bottom of the pan,” Lisa explained. “Just cut your dough into strips, put some cinnamon inside, and put your cinnamon rolls inside your mixture.”

Hot Chocolate Connoisseur

Before breaking into the bun, Foodie Friday Host Hannah Cechini had to prepare their pallet for a Christmas awakening with peppermint mocha hot cocoa. It’s topped with a mountain of whipped cream, and crushed candy canes.

“Lisa calls herself the hot chocolate connoisseur. I’d have to agree with that title,” Hannah said. “She uses really good quality cocoa, and that really does make a difference.”

Memory Lane

Now we’re ready to take a tasty trip down memory lane.

“I think, for me personally, it brings back memories of when I was a little kid, and I would visit my grandmother for Christmas,” Foodie Photog Mike reminisced. “There were very mature pecan trees all around that house. My dad would crack pecans and eat them, and I would join him and my uncle.”

For Hannah, the sticky buns also evoked fond memories.

“These sticky buns remind me a lot of what my family does on Christmas morning,” Hannah said. “My step mom will bake a nice, big tray of cinnamon rolls. And then, we’ll sit around, open presents together, and eat them. I think this is going to be pretty reminiscent of that experience.”

Beautiful Bites

After their first bite, Hannah had a moment of clarity.

“Before we came inside to start filming, we met a gentleman outside, who had just left the store, and said he drove all the way from Milford just for these sticky buns. I totally understand why he made that trek,” Hannah said. “It’s like, the close you get to the middle of it, the warmer it gets, and the gooier it gets. Just gets better and better.”

For Mike, it was a perfect combination.

“The pecans are just a great texture on top here, as well. I like a little bit of chew,” Mike mused. “Cinnamon is probably one of my top five seasonings… Adding some caramel and a little bit of holiday memories brings this over the top.”
