Delaware raises awareness for driving hazards

DELAWARE – Thursday, Delaware governor John Carney signed a proclamation declaring April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, distracted driving contributed to over 5,700 crashes in 2023. It’s now recognized as the leading cause of car accidents in the state, something that officials say people need to be conscious of.

C.R. McLeod, of the Delaware Department of Transportation, said, “With the prevalence of phones and in-car technology, [we’re] just trying to remind people that when they get behind the wheel that their first priority is the road and what’s around them, and being aware.”

In addition to Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Delaware Department of Transportation is launching its “be Del-AWARE” campaign, in an effort to reduce road fatalities.
