Foodie Friday: East Moon Japanese Steakhouse
SALISBURY, Md. – We’re always told not to play with our food. However, the hibachi chefs at East Moon Japanese Steakhouse have taken that old admonishment, and turned it into a tasty feat of fiery flavor.
Heaping Hibachi, Hearty Humor
You better be ready for a show; Chef James and his counterparts will dazzle you by serving up heaping portions of hibachi, alongside a hearty sense of humor.
It starts with white rice, which is quickly joined by an array of yummy veggies. Eggs and the rice get married together and seasoned. Then, it’s decision time: pick your protein. On this visit, Foodie Friday Host Hannah Cechini and Photog Mike opted for steak and shrimp.
Before the proteins can be added to the plates, they need some finishing touches: lemon for the shrimp, and soy teriyaki sauce for the steak. The veggies also perform one final trick before being added to the dish: an onion volcano.
Vibrant Veggies and Scrumptious Sauces
“Aside from the showmanship that comes with it, it’s also just really delicious,” Hannah remarked. “I’m going to die on this hill. I think that hibachi vegetables are the most underrated part of the meal. There’s just a lot of flavor, and they’re really, really well cooked.”
Before we get any further in this meal, let’s check in with Mike, our resident dipping expert, for his thoughts on the yum yum sauce. “It’s definitely creamier. It’s almost got a buttermilk character to it,” he said.
And of the ginger dressing: “It’s almost a cooling, but bright flavor if that makes sense. It’s an interesting mix of both bright and savory,” Mike said.
Stars of the Grill
Now to the stars of the grill.
“Shrimp on the flat top has a snap, but it also has a meaty chew,” Mike said in between chews. “Clearly, it is right at the point of perfectly cooked.”
“The fried rice, because it’s there and it’s cooking with all of the other ingredients, it gets to soak up all of that delicious flavor,” Hannah added.
And, Mike called the teriyaki and soy sauce is a great complement to the earthy flavors of the filet. “The garlic plus soy, I think, is usually a good decision when it comes to steak,” he said.
