Foodie Friday: Back Street Grill

SALISBURY, Md. – Back Street Grill is known for its sandwiches. However, there’s so much more to love.

Good Eats, Unmatched Hospitality

The Reeves Family knows good eats, and unmatched hospitality. Since 2007, all things that fit between two buns – or slices of bread – have been the name of the game at the eatery.

“We started with a check off style menu, and people could check off what deli meats they wanted. We had a small menu, so you could build your own sandwich, salad, or burger,” said General Manager Corey Reeves. “Our menu has just expanded from there.”

You’ll find homemade classics, like lasagna, on the menu. “It kind of just reminds me of the lasagna that your mom would make for you. It’s very comforting, a ton of layers in there, lots of cheesy goodness. And, I love the tomato sauce. It’s really delicious,” quipped Foodie Friday Host Hannah Cechini.

And it’s hard to say ‘no’ to Back Street’s beach fries. “These are a day on the boardwalk in Ocean City, of Rehoboth Beach. Except, you’re here in Salisbury,” said Hannah.

The Boss

However, there’s a good reason why sandwiches remain king. And, The Boss is at the top of the list.

“This is something we usually marinate overnight, and then we grill them the next day, and cook them to order. Soy sauce, honey, lots of spices. Can’t give you the whole recipe! It’s a secret,” Corey said with a laugh.

After a sizzling start on the grill, the customer decides what comes next.

“Traditionally, we just serve it with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and a side of horsey sauce,” Corey explained. “However, some people like to customize it by adding cheese, like provolone or Swiss and mushrooms. But, that’s kind of the name of the game around here; building your own, and customizing it the way you like.”

This sandwich is packed full of flavor.

“There’s a lot of umami going on just because of that soy marinade that’s it’s been through,” Hannah said. “But, it’s really interesting. It’s kind of like the more you chew it, the more flavor comes out of it. I think brioche is a really cool balance between sweet and savory when it comes to breads. So, it’s really just the perfect pairing for a steak that’s been prepared like this.”

“A legit lobster roll”

The next sandwich finds its roots in New England. “We’ve got a nice buttered split top hotdog roll, and then lobster salad, which is freshly made. He’s already buttered the roll. Now, he’s going to load the lobster salad onto it,” Corey said of the lobster roll.

Hannah has met a lot of lobster rolls in their day. And this one holds up to its rich reputation.

“Take it from me. This is a legit lobster roll. Just everything about it reminds me of exactly what you’d get if you were to order a lobster roll in New England. The bun is perfectly buttered and toasted,” Hannah said. “And also, we have to talk about how big the chunks of lobster are in this. That’s another thing that makes this so authentic. You order a lobster roll in New England, and you’re going to get big pieces of claw meat. And, that’s exactly what you’ve got here.”

Soup Perfection

Another favorite that Back Street Grill has down pat is its cream of crab soup. A cup of this stuff is sure to make you a repeat customer.

“Okay, yeah. I need more cream of crab soup in my life, that’s for sure,” Hannah said with a smile. “Warm, creamy, and comforting. There’s really nice chunks of crab in there. I can see why this is such a favorite around here, and why people keep coming back for it.”
