Foodie Friday: Soul Sista’s Restaurant & Lounge
SALISBURY, Md. – Soul food is Angela McGill’s middle name.
Serving Up Smiles
And, on this edition of Foodie Friday, Chef Angela shows us her chops at Soul Sista’s Restaurant & Lounge. “I’ve been cooking since I was a little thing. And, I just love cooking. Always feeding people,” she said.
As Soul Sista’s celebrates its one year anniversary Chef Angela says the blessings are plentiful.
“It’s unbelievable, for real, to have your own building,” Chef Angela said with a smile. “The people have really been nice, and showing up for us. I appreciate that.”
“A lot of skill… a lot of love”
It’s mostly a one woman show, with the help of Chef Angela’s mother and daughter. But, you wouldn’t know it, the way she cooks up a storm of savory goodness. We start with fried catfish.
The fish gets a coating of flour and secret ingredients, which is what Chef Angela says is her secret weapon. After a dip in the fryer, the catfish comes out a perfect golden brown.
“When you have something that is just a fried piece of catfish, and it’s that flavorful, that really just kind of speaks to the skill that the person who made it has,” Foodie Host Hannah said. “There’s a lot of skill in this kitchen, and there’s a lot of love that goes into this food, obviously.”
Chef Angela gives her porkchops similar treatment. Foodie Photog Mike opted for the smothered version.
“The gravy is savory, and just really coats everything very nicely,” said Mike. “They’ve really coaxed out just the very savory, nice notes of what is actually a white meat, which is very impressive.”
Wonderful Wings, Crunchy Chicken
And as for fried chicken, Chef Angela is an expert. “I have met very few people who have the mastery of the fryer like this lady here,” Mike determined. “That’s just an amazing piece of chicken.”
Did we mention the fall off the bone turkey wings on the menu?
“It’s not very often that you get to eat a wing of any kind and you pick up the bone, and it falls right off. I mean, come on!” Hannah said in shock as the turkey slid off the bone. “That meat is just so tender. It’s so packed full of flavor, I love the gravy, too.”
Super Sides and Delicious Dessert
And, even though they’re called sides, these could easily steal any show. The yams perfectly caramelized, and the mac and cheese good enough to go for thirds. We can’t forget the cabbage, fried or steamed, dressed up with sausage and peppers.
What better way to end things, than on a sweet note, with a homemade lemon cupcake. “That’s a good frosting. It’s tart and not too sweet,” Mike said. “And that cake is just nice and spongy. That’s a great way to finish such a rich meal.”
