Parts of Snow Hill still underwater after weekend

Although the worst of the flooding may be behind us, parts of Snow Hill, Md. were still underwater Monday. The Snow Hill Rd. entrance to the town and Byrd Park probably the worst of it all as both were sitting under over 2 ft. of water.
The good news, the water has receded significantly which allowed those like Bill Candy, who owns Riverside Auction Co. At the Cannery to begin cleaning.
Candy, who’s business sits right on the Pocomoke River, said Saturday the water was flowing with the current through his shop. Luckily for him, he and his wife Janice had planned ahead and moved all their merchandise off the floor.
Candy said the last time water made it inside the shop was during Hurricane Sandy.
Monday though Candy was there cleaning, using a wet vac to try diligently. Thirty seconds to fill the vacuum up with water, then Candy would dump the water and repeat the process.
Despite all that Candy remained in good spirits because as he said as long as he can make it through whatever obstacle he faces, life isn’t that bad.
“I’m 76 years old and the good lord has never thrown anything at me I can’t handle you know, so you just take it in stride there’s no need in crying over spilt milk, you know its happened and that’s it go on don’t fret that’s the way I look at it,” Candy said.
For local business owners, the flooding is more than just a cleaning inconvenience.
Those like Garrow King said Snow Hill road being shutdown is more than just a inconvenience, it’s hurting business.
“It’s been very difficult for Snow Hill, the businesses here because of the loss of direct contact with the city of Salisbury,” King said. “They’ll wait for the waters to recede before they come into town and in the meantime businesses suffer.”
County officials said they hope the water on Snow Hill Road clears out over the next few days.
