MD lawmakers say hospitality industry opposes One Fair Wage Act
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Local lawmakers are keeping small businesses in focus this legislative session; especially the Eastern Shore’s hospitality industry.
State Senator Mary Beth Carozza says she met with several family owned-businesses across the Eastern Shore, who are not in favor of the One Fair Wage Act. The legislation would raise Maryland’s restaurant workers’ wages from a sub minimum of $3.63, plus the promise of tips.
Advocates for the bill say rising costs of living are pushing thousands of workers out of the industry for better pay. However, others are concerned that with increased wages would come increased taxes for all.
“The possibility of changing the tip credit system, not only hurts the employers, it hurts the employees,” Sen. Carozza said.
Senator Carozza also tells 47 ABC WMDT that lawmakers are working to start a coalition with the Maryland Hotel Motel Association and Salisbury Camber of Commerce to oppose the bill.
