Renovations at the 1955 War Memorial in Salisbury almost complete
SALISBURY, Md. – A renovation project at the 1955 War Memorial in Salisbury is almost complete, after nearly 3 years of work.
Chris Demone, public information officer for the city of Salisbury, tells 47 ABC that the construction should be done in time for Memorial Day on May 27. He adds that the work left to do on the Memorial includes installing flag poles, setting concrete and fixing leaks in the sprinkler system. The LED lights have already been installed as well.
The City is planning to host a ceremonial ribbon cutting on Memorial Day, but an exact time has not been finalized for that event. Demone says the ceremony will not interfere with the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center’s annual ceremony which is happening at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 27.
According to the renovation project’s Facebook page, “In 1955, the Wicomico County Maryland War Memorial was completed by the citizens of Wicomico County along with the support of the local Posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The 32 foot tall concrete Memorial located along Route 13 at the intersection of Priscilla Street is dedicated to those Wicomico Countians who have lost their lives in the service of their country. A bronze plaque donated by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and 200 pound bronze eagle at the top of the monument are registered with the Maryland Military Monuments Commission.”
In April 2016, Mayor Jake Day and others cut open the Memorial’s sealed cylinder that contained a scroll with the names of an estimated 156 Wicomico County service men. “The names are of those that died from WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. The cylinder had been entombed in the War Memorial for over 60 years. Senior Conservator Vicki Lee from the Maryland Archives was on hand to ensure that the integrity of the documents was properly maintained,” according to the Facebook page.
The 1955 War Memorial is a 32-foot tall concrete obelisk located along Route 13 at the intersection of Priscilla Street.
