Decatur completes undefeated season, win first-ever football championship
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Seahawks held off every Huntingtown rally, winning the MPSSAA 2A football championship, 21-13, Thursday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
It did not take long for Decatur to get on the board. Senior quarterback Brycen Coleman called a quarterback keeper and went in untouched from three yards out. A Brogan Eastlack point-after gave the Seahawks a 7-0 lead just 1:45 into the game.
Huntingtown forced some key stops in the first half to keep their deficit to seven.
Decatur broke through again, this time with a fade pass to Trybe Wise in the back corner of the end zone. After a brief battle for possession of the ball on the ground, the play was ruled a touchdown. Decatur’s lead stood at 14-0 at halftime.
Huntingtown finally found the end zone midway through the third quarter, but the Seahawks had another response just moments later.
Decatur found themselves inside the Hurricane 5-yard line late in the third quarter. Once again, Coleman called his own number and crossed the goalline just before the start of the final period.
Huntingtown added a fourth-quarter touchdown, but Decatur blocked the point-after attempt.
With an eight-point advantage in the final minute, Decatur’s defense needed one final stop.
Senior Gavin Solito came up big with a sack on second down to force a third-and-23. Cornerback Tre Dorn broke up a throw over the middle on fourth down.
Decatur finishes the season with a perfect 14-0 record. It is the first football championship, and the first perfect season in program history.
