New baseball field for athletes with disabilities proposed for Salisbury complex

SALISBURY, Md. – Officials shared some exciting news for local young athletes on the Eastern Shore. A new field is in the works for Salisbury’s Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex.

Wicomico County Recreation & Parks announced a proposal for a new baseball field, on Thursday, that would be called “Field 7.5”.

It would be used by Little League Challenger Division, which is a brand of baseball designed to accommodate kids with special needs. The director for the County’s recreation & parks says it will provide opportunities to the more than 3,000 kids currently using special education services in Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties. It’s a population he says is under-served and deserves more.

“It’s a segment of the population that we have not done a lot with and we are excited about the potential for that field and the facility to able to accommodate those kids and their families,” says Steve Miller, Director of Wicomico County Recreation, Parks & Tourism.

Miller says they are already getting great feedback on the proposal, including teams ready to jump on board. He also hopes this will serve more than locals by drawing athletes and their families from all over Delmarva.

Proposed funding would come from several sources including the county, a state grant and private donors. Once funding is locked down, Field 7.5 should be complete by the Spring of 2020.
