District seeks additional funding, will present new case to taxpayers

SELBYVILLE, Del. –  Residents in southeast Sussex County are on the verge of yet another referendum vote for the Indian River School District.

This referendum dropped the current expense question, but they are still looking for funding increases for construction of a new Sussex Central High School, eight new classrooms at Indian River High and four additional classes for Selbyville Middle.

For now, the plan is to purchase rental trailers out of their operating budget, unless this referendum passes to answer the overcrowding conditions.

“I would like the taxpayers to take a look at this district beyond the year 2024-25, and see what exactly the impact of this referendum does, if it passes, if it doesn’t pass,” said superintendent Mark Steele.

Steele says there will be a presentation at Thursday night’s public meeting at Sussex Central High School that will give a more in-depth look at what conditions the district is facing.

That meeting will take place at 6:30 PM.
