14-year-old charged with stealing vehicle in Lewes last month

WILMINGTON, Del. – A 14-year-old boy from Wilmington has been charged with a vehicle theft in Lewes that happened last month.

Delaware State Police say around 1:47 p.m. on August 9th, troopers responded to Ash Road in Lewes. When troopers arrived, they found that a silver 2012 Kia Rio had been stolen from the driveway of a 75-year-old victim of Shoemakersville, Pa.

The vehicle was found abandoned on the roadside of Truitt Avenue in Rehoboth Beach later that day. Investigators say the vehicle’s ignition on the steering column had been damaged during the theft. Surveillance video and pictures generated tips from the public, and the teen turned himself in on August 31st.

The 14-year-old was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief under $1,000, and third degree criminal trespass. He was released to a parent.
