Black Leaders on Delmarva: Craig Mathies

Craig Mathies is a proud Somerset County resident.

Just talk with him for a few minutes and you will see his dedication for improving the community’s quality of life through his work as a county commissioner and pastor.

“I’m involved several civic and social activities and have been part of the county for quite some time and try to contribute as much as I can.”, shares Mathies.

This is Mathies’ third term as a commissioner, but his first as President.

Its a job that he doesn’t take lightly.

“It means quite a bit to me to be able to speak on behalf of those who may not have the courage, or may not have the know-how or may not be bold enough.”, says Matheis.

Mathies is also a man of deep faith, pastoring a Zion Baptist church in Cambridge for almost 20 years.

But one of his biggest accomplishments is the family he and his wife have raised together.

“God has been good to us in regards to our children and grandchildren. I would like to think that my wife and I have inspired them of the importance of education and being self-sufficient. “, says the county leader.

Mathies was born and raised in Marion Station.

He got a formal education from Crisfield High, but learned some of his most important lessons from watching his grandfather who advocated fairness and equality in his community.

“My grandfather was a farmer and a bus contractor and he was very involved in the social aspect of trying to contribute and being a leader in helping the minority community.”

There were some twists and turns along the way, but Mathies has found his calling as a county leader and pastor.

Its a life that Mathies he says he’s been privileged to have.

“I have been blessed to be put in positions and places that I never would have imagined.”
