MDOT to install new traffic signal on Route 113
BERLIN, Md. – In Worcester County, a new signal light is getting installed at the intersection of Worcester Highway (US 113) and Main Street (MD 818).
The move comes after MDOT data shows several crashes have been reported in the area.
We spoke with the state’s highway administration (MDOT SHA), who say 20,000 vehicles use that section of Route 113 daily.
MDOT District Engineer Mark Crampton says over the course of 5 years, traffic data revealed several crashes happened in the area with various injuries and even one fatality.
Crampton says the goal is to increase highway safety. “When we’re out there putting signs, signals, and other things like that up we’re trying to alert motorist and change their behaviors,” Crampton said.
“Even once the signal is in, growth is going to continue to happen whether it’s through development or changes in land use.”
Construction on the $100,000 signal began last October.
The new signal will begin operating in a flash-only mode this Saturday to alert drivers and will become fully operational this upcoming Tuesday, January 18th.
