Unique traditions and customs to celebrate New Year’s Eve
47 ABC – New Year’s may be all about looking ahead, but there are certain things from your past that influence certain traditions today. Several cultures do unique traditions and superstitions to celebrate the upcoming year.
In Mexico and other Latin American countries, they will wear specific colored underwear. For example, people wear red to find love, green or yellow for wealth and white for peace in the new year.
In Colombia and other counties, they will grab their suitcase and walk around the block with them at midnight to travel more.
And because local matters, 47 ABC spoke to two Salisbury locals, who also do a unique custom. Raul and Ingrid Carrera say that they eat 12 grapes at midnight, each having 12 wishes. “Each grape represents each month, so it’s like a goal and a wish and going through the year, you’re accomplishing every wish, every goal,” Ingrid Carrera says.
Other customs also include eating black-eyed peas for prosperity and good luck.
In South Africa, ‘Out with the Old’ is the motto, where people throw everything off their balconies, getting rid of old possessions symbolizing a fresh start.
