Local law enforcement warning of spike in crime around New Year’s

SALISBURY, Md. – While many will be celebrating the new year, others will become victims, either to break ins to their vehicles or homes, or victims to assault.

According to the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, violent and property offenses rise over the week after Christmas, with a 900-percent spike in violent crimes from 9 PM New Year’s Eve to 3 AM on New Year’s Day.

Local police say they see these problems here, as well.

Sheriff Mike Lewis with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office says vehicles become, “targets of opportunity.”

Master Corporal Melissa Jaffe, with Delaware State Police, tells 47ABC there is a high spike in vehicle break ins happening throughout the state.

There are a number of reasons for the rise in break ins, including the presence of gifts in vehicles.

“People are more vulnerable this time of the year, whether they’re just not being as cautious as they normally are because they’re too busy running around,” said Jaffe.

Law enforcement says the simplest precaution you could use is to lock your doors. They tell us thieves are much less likely to break in to a secured car.

“It’s rare that vehicles windows are broken when they are entering these cars. They’re normally checking the vehicles to see if they’re unlocked, and are going into them,” said Sheriff Lewis.

Lewis adds they see a spike in assaults this time of year, especially New Year’s Eve.

“We know from past experiences that we will have a dramatic increase in the number of calls for service, and the number of calls unfortunately that result in assaults.”

Police want to remind folks to stay safe, drink responsibly and be ready to alert authorities.

“If you see something, say something. We urge citizens to report any type of suspicious activity to their local police department,” said Jaffe.

Sheriff Lewis says his office will coordinate with Maryland State Police, Salisbury Police and Fruitland Police to answer the uptick in calls on New Year’s.
