Tattoo artist gives breast cancer survivors a new boost of confidence

MILLSBORO, Del. – Ink and Lash shop store owner Jennifer McCahill is using her gift of tattooing to change the lives of breast cancer survivors.

“I just want to help these women and men who’ve really kicked breast cancers butt and had said you’re not going to take me and I’m going to be awesome while I do it,” said McCahill.

After opening her new shop in July, McCahill has been using her talents to do 3D nipple and areola tattooing on these survivors who say going through the process of getting a mastectomy can often leave them with low self-esteem.

“I felt less because I didn’t have the areolas, and I know sometimes it’s like oh well, but it makes you a woman,” said breast cancer survivor Manika Poulson.

Back in October, in honor of breast cancer awareness month, McCahill gave 5 women, all survivors of breast cancer, a free tattoo session which can often get expensive. And one those survivors, Manika Poulson, says getting her areolas tattooed made her a different person.

“I’m shopping, I’m buying bras, you just come into yourself. Now, I’ve kind of like blossomed slowly. I’m able to talk about it. I’m able to tell people about it,” said Poulson.

And McCahill says just being able to put that smile on her client’s face, is what matters the most to her.

“It just means a lot to me to be able to help them and to just help end their journey there because really just at the end of the day they’re just trying to close that door,” said McCahill.

McCahill adds that she’ll have another contest next October for breast cancer awareness month, where survivors we’ll have another chance at getting the free tattoo service.
