Shatter The Stigma Walk at Wor-Wic aims to make asking for help a shame-free act
SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico Goes Purple will be hosting a “Shatter The Stigma” Walk next Saturday, September 10th, at Wor-Wic Community College. They are partnering with the school and the community to help normalize asking for help, especially when facing addiction.
Organizers tell us they can have all the resources available, but so long as stigma exist, people who need help feel guilty and ashamed of asking for it, or worse are made to feel that way by those who don’t understand addiction. They tell us that kind of feeling can be isolating, and from a health, perspective hurts everyone. They say they have to tackle the stigma around asking for help and prevent harmful rhetoric from preventing or sabotaging someone’s progress on the path to recovery.
“That is one of the biggest things that keeps people from getting help is if somebody stigmatizes them treats them like a bad person when they receive support and when you have people supporting you around you it makes it easier to take that first step into recovery,’ said Wor-Wic Mental Health Counselor Penny Walters.
The event will begin at 9:30AM on the 10th and participants will walk around the Wor-Wic Campus, with additional events, fundraising opportunities, and resources available for all participants.
