Daycare death trial could “take weeks”, state says

this comes roughly a year and a half after police arrested 52-year-old valorie handy. as 47 a-b-c’s lili zheng reports — this trial is expected to last several weeks. track 1 valorie handy sits in sussex court superior court — as a defendant charged with murder by abuse. the fifty-two year old woman– is accused of killing a 10-month old boy at her home daycare handy’s little disciples in january of 20-15. in opening statements wednesday — a prosecutor for the state of delaware — claims the child died from a large amount of diphenhydramine allegedly found in his system. the antihistamine is an active ingredient in benadryl. the state testified — too much of it can force someone to stop breathing and possibly kill them. and that handy — was the sole daycare provider that january day who could have fed the infant that drug. in court wednesday, a defense attorney for handy told the jury to consider six factors in the coming weeks of this trial. this includes evidence the state did collect — and what they didn’t track 2 a detective with the delaware state police testified that snacks and bottles of milk brought to the daycare by the child’s mother — were not catalogued. testifying — investigators did not think it was needed at the time. during opening statements — the defense told jury there’s evidence there child was exposed to some level of diphenhydramine before he was enrolled in handy’s daycare. lili zheng, 47 a-b-c again — we’re told this trial is going to take several weeks. tomorrow — a medical examiner is expected to testify. we have an update for you in a murder case that 47 abc has been following since 19-98.
