‘Walk for Freedom’ sheds light on human trafficking, community members show support

CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Saturday morning in Cambridge, activists bundled up and headed to Long Wharf Park for a cold but memorable walk; a ‘Walk for Freedom. Harriet’s house and the Eastern Shore Human Trafficking task force hosted the walk to take a stand against human trafficking.

January is human trafficking awareness month and organizers say, it’s the perfect opportunity to shed light on an ongoing issue. Julie Crain with Harriet’s house says their walk was truly significant.

Crain tells us, that’s because they took the road slaves walked when they were forced off the boats at the Long Wharf and brought to the courthouse. “So we wanted to emphasize that today because slavery still exists even though it looks a little different than it did back in those days. It did not end with the emancipation proclamation, it’s still here and it’s in the form of human trafficking,” says Crain. She adds, “For people to make that commitment to still come and take a stand against human trafficking means everything.”

Both organizations say they want to continue educating the community about the dangers and reality of human trafficking.
