Community remembers former deputy

Hundreds of people in Salisbury honored the life of former Deputy Steven Ray after his sudden death on May 17.

The community held a procession for the former deputy at the Allen Memorial Church.

Military members, police officers, family and friends drove together all the way to Mardela where he would spend most of his time.

Deputy Ray was a Wicomico County deputy, Marine and soccer coach at Mardela Middle School and High School, and he leaves behind a long-time girlfriend and three children.

"We actually grew up together and graduated together from high school, and we used to babysit Stevie," said Crystal White.

"He was like a little brother to all of us," said White.

In lieu of flowers, Deputy Ray's family asks for contributions to be made to the Officer Down website. The money will be dispersed by the FOP Lodge under the direction of his family.
