Meet the Candidates: Dorchester County District 5

(DORCHESTER CO, Md) – The fifth district seat on the Dorchester County Council is one of the big races on the Eastern Shore…

As incumbent Councilman, Mike Detmer seeks re-election to the seat he won in 2022…

Detmer tells WMDT, “Well, I ran for reelection because, I’m passionate about trying to make a difference. I think I’ve done good work, and I want to continue to try to push in that direction.”

Against challenger, Semuel Thompson, a Dorchester County native and local school bus driver.

“To be honest with you, I want to run cause I want to make a difference for everyone in Dorchester County. And also I want to do things for the people,” says Thompson.

Both candidates speak about their plans should they win the county seat.

With Thompson saying, “First I want to tackle is the people’s concerns first. Like like everybody’s concerns. Let’s address the people’s concerns first.”

While Detmer says, “Well, the main issue, the one that is above all the others, is efficiency of county government and effectiveness of county government. That’s what I’m going to continue to pursue.”

As well as a topic both plan to address should they win: The safety of kids across Dorchester County.

“I would like to look into how we can get our schools safer. So then that way they will look where they live, look what day, all the fights and everything in the schools and they will look with fights at the bus,” says Detmer.

With Thompson saying, “We have to continue to do little things like, fund, recreation programs for them, which turns into big things like advocacy, in Annapolis, with our legislators and, you know, properly funding the schools.”
