Chamber Chat: Charitable giving on the Eastern Shore

SALISBURY, Md. – In this week’s Chamber Chat, WMDT’s John Trout and Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce President Bill Chambers discuss the importance of charitable giving on the Eastern Shore.

Nonprofits across the state, not just on the Lower Shore, are facing budget cuts. Between federal cutbacks and increased taxes and fees on businesses in Maryland, Bill said one of the first things businesses do when they look at trimming their budgets is their community involvement, hurting non-profit partners.

“It’s really ramped up now that we’re a couple of years into not only the federal administration, but our current administration in the State this year; the real ugliness of the fact that donations have lagged,” Bill said. “Organizations that receive grants are not receiving those grants, and this is really putting a strain on nonprofits and not just the ones you all think about.”

Bill added that inflation is certainly a factor when it comes to our dollars not going as far, as well as waste, fraud, and abuse.
