Sussex County National Recovery Event
GEORGETOWN, Del.– National Recovery Month is an annual observance during the month of September to educate the public and share resources for those who are struggling.
The Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health’s Chief of Addiction Services Kate Brookins says the event is also a celebration of those in recovery.
“What it means is that we want to celebrate all the clients and people who have struggled with addiction,” Brookins said. “We want to celebrate those people who are trying to recover and they’re in treatment and doing the steps. We want to celebrate the family members and loved ones who are also trying to recover.”
Attendees of the event also had the opportunity to receive free training and Naloxone nasal spray– a treatment designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency.
“We mainly narcan is there to save someone’s life,” Harned said. “If they’re going through an opioid overdose situation and we hand them out because we believe it’s important to keep people alive so that they might find recovery if need be.”
Organizers say this event is a chance for people to connect with local resources and get support from the community, so that people in recovery are reminded that they are not on the journey alone.
“Recovery is possible,” Brookins said. “Not everyone recovers the same way and so we are here to help. And we will do what we can to help them cross the finish line.”
