New Community Opens in Princess Anne
Princess Anne, Md. — Developers and community partners came together Friday for a ribbon cutting ceremony on a new community in Princess Anne named Somerset Grove, located next to Washington High School, meant to provide affordable housing for people in the area.
The property has undergone attempted development since the early 2000s, until three years ago when developer Clayton Homes got involved. Edward Flinton, the regional VP for the company, said the moving of dirt and building roads began in January and they got permits to begin putting buildings up last month.
Since then, five houses have been constructed out of a projected 79 that will eventually make up the neighborhood. Flinton said one of the major goals of their work is to make homes attainable and affordable.
“We’re about building dreams, memories and giving attainable housing to people that can’t always afford it,” Flinton said.
Somerset County officials told WMDT that Somerset Grove is the first major subdivision the county has had in over 20 years.
Zelma Hayward, a Princess Anne town commissioner, told WMDT that the new housing will benefit the community in multiple ways.
“The exciting part about it is that it will bring affordable and attainable housing to the local area, which means it will bring more business to the town of Princess Anne,” Hayward said.
She added that the homes are a good way for young families to get started owning property and save for their futures.
“It’s going to be a safe environment. It’s a great neighborhood. And I think that if you are looking for a home or if you’re purchasing your first time home, this is probably the best place for you to start,” Hayward said.
