“Kinds Minds United” Broadens Outreach as They Join Ocean City Chamber of Commerce

OCEAN CITY, Md. – The ribbon has been cut as Kind Minds United, a non-profit that brings mental health advocacy and suicide prevention efforts to local children and youth, is welcomed to the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce.

The vice president of the organization, Tiffany Barry, is a licensed social worker in the area, and knows the importance of mental health in young people.

“We are here not as a clinical setting, but as a direct means to interact with kids and help them with these basic tools to improve their mental health, to improve their daily life, their mindset.”

Kindminds United looks to bring mental health awareness to schools in Worcester County through lesson plans focusing art activities and outdoor adventures.

The founder and president, Katrin Huber, saw a severe need for the services in the county.

“We really have a rate of around 10% of children in our county who are actually trying to take their own life, which is really scary.” Said Huber.

The organization, looks to lower this percentage through a variety of prevention strategies.

“I make a, safety plan with them, which is basically, who can I call at 2:00 in the morning?” Said Huber. “Where can I find help? What is a safe place for me to be? You know what makes me happy? That kind of stuff.”

Kind Minds wants to use these prevention strategies to partner with other businesses within the chamber, to get them trained on suicide prevention. And the chamber president and CEO, Amy Thompson, hopes to see a long lasting impact in the community.

“I really loved what one of the board members shared today that by addressing mental health in youth, we’re creating resilient adults who will be part of the workforce in the future.” Said Thompson.
