Denton Mourns Loss of Police Chief

(DENTON, Md) – “It’s horrible. It’s just horrible. Everyone just needs to pay better attention…” says one passerby WMDT spoke to.

The feeling has been the same across Caroline County, just days after Police Chief, George Bacorn was killed in a car crash at the age of 62 years old.

For people like Denton Town Administrator, Scott Getchell, it feels like losing more than a Chief of Police.

Scott tells us, “He’s been in police work for over 30 some years. But because of his demeanor, his positive demeanor and the way that he would handle any given situation, you’d never know it because he was very positive, very upbeat. He was a joy to be around.”

While local business owners didn’t want to speak on camera, plenty of people felt the impact Chief Bacorn had on the community…

Especially when he was involved in a little bit of everything.

“He was involved in church, and he was involved in the Masonic lodge and, the airline yacht club, and he was just involved in so many things. So this loss is felt by so many people,” says Scott.

Then there’s who the man George Bacorn was behind the badge. And as we found out, there wasn’t a major difference.

Scott tells WMDT, “It didn’t matter if he was in uniform or not. It was the same guy. Very likable. He made friends wherever you went. Yeah. So I don’t think you could tell in uniform or out of uniform. Unless we had a crisis of some kind.”

The Denton Police Department announced a remembrance service for Chief Bacorn Saturday, October 3rd with visitation beginning at 10 A.M. at North Caroline High School. All are welcome to attend.
