$2.5M Water Line Project Greenlit for Assateague Island

ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md. – Assateague Island National Seashore has announced plans to begin a $2.5 million water line replacement project to improve water infrastructure in the park.

The project, slated to begin in mid-October, will improve water pressure and reliability for visitors and park operations while supporting current needs and future facility improvements. Officials say that the existing water system was designed in the 1990s, and no longer meets the demands of current visitor levels. The planned improvements will enhance water pressure throughout the system.

Construction will primarily use boring horizontal techniques to minimize ground disturbance and visitor impact. No road closures are expected; however, campground loops will close on a rolling basis beginning in early November. The campground will remain open at reduced capacity during construction.

The project is funded through Assateague Island recreation fee revenue.
