Bethany Beach Police Hand Out Free Safety Gear to Help Keep Cyclists Visible

BETHANY BEACH, Del.– The Bethany Police Department is helping cyclists stay safe by handing out free bike lights and other safety gear during the busy summer season.

The event brought together officers from the Bethany Beach Police Department and community volunteers, who distributed free bike lights, shared bicycle safety information and answered questions from cyclists.

Patrolman First Class Molly Ryan said one of the biggest safety concerns officers have seen this summer is that many riders are unfamiliar with Delaware’s Bicycle laws.

“The biggest safety concern we’ve seen this summer is people who aren’t familiar with the bike laws,” Ryan said. “Bicycles have to follow the same rules as cars on the road. It’s important to have your bike light on.”

This event is an ongoing effort to reduce crashes involving bicyclists snd pedestrians during the busy summer season, when thousands of residents and visitors rely on bikes to get around town.

Volunteer Arthur Diver said staying aware of your surroundings is one of the most important ways cyclists can protect themselves.

“I think the most important thing is to be alert,” Diver said. “When you’re out biking, you need to be aware of the people around you and act accordingly. If you’re aware of what’s happening, you’re going to be much safer.”
