LAUREL, Del. – The Laurel Police Department has arrested a Centreville woman after they say she filed a false sexual assault allegation.

Police have arrested 21-year-old Alexis Hawkins on charges of providing a false statement to law enforcement and falsely reporting a criminal incident. She was arraigned and released to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of a $1500 secure bond.

On Jun. 4, police responded to a reported sexual assault that allegedly occurred in the 100 block of Delaware Avenue. Detectives were requested after patrol officers made contact with the alleged victim, identified as Hawkins.

During the initial investigation, Hawkins reported to officers that she had been sexually assaulted earlier in the day by a male subject, and was receiving medical treatment at TidalHealth Nanticoke Hospital. Detectives conducted multiple interviews, reviewed surveillance footage, examined electronic communications, and pursued numerous investigative leads to determine the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

Throughout the course of the investigation, detectives discovered substantial evidence contradicting Hawkins’ account. Police say surveillance footage directly refuted the reported sequence of events, electronic communications were inconsistent with the allegations, and additional investigative findings further disproved the claim. Based on the totality of the evidence, investigators determined that the reported sexual assault did not occur. Instead, officers determined that the allegation had been intentionally fabricated after Hawkins was reportedly rejected by the accused individual.

The Laurel Police Department says they treat every report of sexual assault with the utmost seriousness, going on to say the following.

“Every allegation is thoroughly investigated with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to following the facts wherever they lead. While we remain steadfast in supporting victims of sexual violence, individuals who knowingly make false reports will be held accountable. False allegations not only consume valuable public safety resources but can also inflict significant harm on innocent individuals and undermine public confidence in victims whose reports are legitimate.”

Anyone who believes they have previously been the subject of a false criminal allegation made by Hawkins, or have information relevant to similar incidents, are encouraged to contact authorities at (302) 875-2244.
