Ocean City Prepares for Traffic Safety during Memorial Day

Ocean City, Md. – Ocean City Police Department urge pedestrians and cyclists to pay attention to traffic rules.

Memorial Day weekend is coming up, meaning that the resort town is preparing for tourist season again.  Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) are preparing for this influx of people and cars by reminding everyone about automobile and pedestrian safety.

“You’re paying attention to crosswalks and the sidewalks when you’re making turns into parking lots and pay attention to bikes and scooters coming up the bus lanes.” says Ashley Miller, Deputy Communications Manager for Ocean City Police Department.

The town is expecting careless pedestrians and cyclists to act as a concern for public safety over the holiday weekend. By watching where one walks and patiently watching traffic signs, risk is removed. OCPD also stresses the importance of planning ahead with not just hotels but also with dinner reservations and beach visits Tracking such elements reduces the amount of time on the road, and smoothly commuting and parking takes away the feeling of panic and frustration when one has to improvise how to make their vacation plans. This is OCPD’s second summer without seasonal officers but Miller is still confident that there are enough staff to suitably maintain public safety.

“You’re going to see the bright yellow uniforms, our public safety officers. What they can do is they help our officers with, you know, the municipal citations for smoking on the boardwalk, littering – that peace and good order stuff that the town of Ocean City specifically has ordinances with.” says Miller.

Police efforts will be supplemented with Public Safety Officers, who, in comparison to last year, are experiencing a major increase in staff.

Ocean City residents and visitors can expect a new OCPD building location on Somerset Street.
