MD Phone Free Schools Act heads to Governor’s Desk
(MARYLAND) – Maryland schools could be moving to update their cell phone policy for students with a new bill making its way to Governor Wes Moore’s desk.
The Maryland Phone Free Schools Act would require each county’s board of education to develop and implement a new policy by the start of the 2027-28 school year. Maryland joins other states, like Virginia and Delaware in creating policies that clearly outline the limits on student cell phone use in school.
Details of the bill include exceptions of cell phone use for disability accommodations, but practical decisions, such as how devices are stored are at the discretion of the school system.
If signed by Governor Moore, will go into effect on July 1st.
