Douglas King announced as WiHi Tribe Boys Basketball Head Coach
SALISBURY, Md. – There seems to be a new sheriff in town for the Wicomico High School basketball program. After 6 decades of sustained success and consistent results, the team has announced a new head boys’ basketball coach to be the successor to Butch Waller.
Douglas King will take the reins, and today he had a introductory press conference. He started saying, his goal was to always become the lead man at his alma mater.
“I lived 2 blocks from here, maybe 2-3 blocks from here, when I was in the 9th grade, I used to walk here every day.”
According to King,. his neighborhood roots make him perfect to understand the athletes that walk into the basketball gym. He credits Waller for teaching him how to become a great basketball player, and also leader.
“What I learned is don’t sell yourself short, go watch teams, go scout, and be prepared. You need to have everything be ready for practice, and then let the game be the game. We prepared and we just lose, then they were better than us, but we can’t go out there and not be prepared. You got to be prepared for whatever is coming to you, so that’s what I learned from him.”
He mentioned how Waller would consistently go to other High School games to watch some of the best perform, and scout talent.
King was coached by Waller from 1994 to 1997 and earned Bayside South Player of the Year honors in 1997. He scored more than 1,000 points for WiHi, and he says the culture is unique.
“WiHi culture in the Bayside, I don’t know you really don’t have the build on it because all the ex players, all the 2002 players, its just something about around here locally, it’s never going to change, we just win.”
King is chomping at the bit to coach his team.
“They are going to be very important because they are going to be first group, and they are very coachable. If you see where the chips fall, it’s going to be fun. I can’t wait and am looking forward to it, and we’re going to see.”
