Bethany Beach Fire Company Completes Annual Rescue Jet Ski Training Ahead of Summer Season

BETHANY BEACH, Del. — Members of the Bethany Beach Fire Company completed their annual refresher training Friday for rescue jet ski beach launch operations as the department prepares for the start of the busy summer season along the Delaware coast.
The specialized training is considered a key part of the department’s ocean rescue program and is designed to ensure emergency personnel remain ready to respond quickly and effectively to water-related emergencies during the height of tourist season.
During the training exercises, crews practiced coordinated beach launch procedures using the department’s rescue ski in surf conditions similar to those faced during real emergency responses. Launching a rescue ski from the shoreline requires careful timing, communication and teamwork between the ski operator and rescue swimmer.
Members trained on evaluating surf conditions, maneuvering safely through breaking waves and maintaining control of the watercraft during both launch and recovery operations.
The refresher also focused heavily on coordination between rescue swimmers and operators once the rescue ski clears the surf zone. Rescue swimmers must enter the water and successfully reconnect with the operator while navigating constantly changing ocean conditions, a process that demands physical endurance, situational awareness and strong communication skills.
Department officials said the annual training helps personnel maintain proficiency in high-risk, low-frequency rescue operations while reinforcing operational readiness and safety procedures ahead of the summer influx of visitors.
The Bethany Beach Fire Company thanked all members who participated in the training and continue dedicating extensive time to maintaining the specialized skills needed to protect both residents and tourists throughout the summer months.
