Wicomico Habitat for Humanity Breaks ground on Two Land Plots

(SALISBURY, Md) – One local family just got a big step closer to settling in at a new home.
Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County broke ground for two new homes in Salisbury Wednesday morning.

Over the course of the last few years, the family has been working on accumulating “sweat hours” with the organization to be able to afford the home — which is being built on Christopher Street.

Wicomico Habitat for Humanity CEO, Molly Hilligoss says the organization is working as hard as they can to provide attainable housing on the Eastern shore and address the housing shortage.

Adding that they’re doing so in part by cutting down the time it takes to accumulate those “Sweat Hours.”

“We are changing our model so that people don’t have to wait that long. So in the future, let’s say someone applies to become a homeowner next week. We think by this time next year they’ll be buying their house…” says Wicomico Habitat CEO, Molly Hilligoss.

Maryland Delegate, Sheree Sample Hughes also spoke about the importance of the groundbreaking.
She hopes this can be a beacon of hope for the people she represents in Wicomico County.

Delegate Hughes tells WMDT, “If you believe in your heart and has a faith that you want to and can be a homeowner is possible, is possible right here in Wicomico County and the city of Salisbury by working with habitat and having that fee. So I don’t make this all the difference.”

The houses on Christopher Street are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
