Wicomico County welcomes back opening prayers
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. — The Wicomico County Council has announced that meetings will begin with a prayer offered by community clergy and faith leaders.
The decision comes just thee weeks after the county announced they would no longer open council meetings with the Lord’s Prayer. The opening practice drew attention after a council member read scripture from the Bible during a meeting on Sep. 16, 2025. Subsequently, the County was faced a potential lawsuit from the Freedom From Religion Foundation by keeping the opening prayer practice in place.
Wicomico County Council President John Cannon said that they’ve introduced a new resolution that would allow clergy up to two minutes to pray prior to the start of council and public comments. Participation is entirely voluntary, and no member of the County Council, County staff, or the public is required to participate.
“Which we think would be a great solution. It’s no different than what the city of Salisbury is actually doing or doing today. So, we’re looking forward to getting that process started to know,” Cannon said about the new practice.
The new practice does not permit the Council to review or direct the content of any prayer. Prayer leaders are advised that the purpose of the prayer is to solemnize the occasion, and that it should not be used to proselytize, advance, or disparage any faith, belief, or non-belief. Eligible clergy and faith leaders include those who represent established religious congregations or organizations serving the Wicomico County community. They must meet regularly within county lines and be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.
“This practice reflects the Council’s respect for the diverse religious traditions, beliefs, and philosophical viewpoints represented throughout Wicomico County, while providing an opportunity for prayer and reflection at Legislative meetings,” the Council said in a press release.
Faith leaders may contact the Council Office at 410-548-4696, or sign up through the Council’s website to offer a prayer. Prayer opportunities will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
