OCEAN PINES, Md. – Two World War II-era unexploded military devices were found on Assateague Island National Seashore Sunday.

The first device was called in just past 8:30 that morning by park staff. Later that afternoon, a second device was recovered at a home on Greenwood Lane in Ocean Pines. Investigators say the second device was taken to the home from the beach.

Bomb squad units responded, along with the United States Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal team from Dover Air Force Base. Experts determined the devices were M29A1 Practice Rockets, a type of military training device known as the “Super Bazooka”.

The devices were rendered safeand disposed of by Air Force personnel. No injuries were reported.

Assateague Island was historically used as a military bombing and training range during World War II. Investigators warned that more unexploded military ordinances may still be buried on the beaches. They added that if anyone finds such a device, they should never touch, move, or transport it. Instead, they should leave the area immiediately and call 911.
