Ocean City beach busy despite swimming restriction

OCEAN CITY, Md. – The beach in Ocean City was closed to swimmers on Monday, but the surf’s still up. WMDT visited the resort town to catch up with visitors and locals alike. The locals tell us that the swimming restriction doesn’t seem to be stopping everybody.

“I still see (people) in the ocean, either way. So, I don’t think it’s deterring all of them,” said Ocean City resident Michelle Abu-Zaid.

For visitor Deanna Buberniak, who’s vacationing from her home state of Pennsylvania, the beach advisory isn’t ruining all of her fun.

“It’s definitely disappointing, but I understand that we all want to be safe. So, we’ll just sit beside (the water) and do what we can today,” Buberniak said.

Even with some disappointment, there is a light at the end of the inlet.

“There’s plenty to do, great weather and relaxation, and lots of fun stops … And, I see the waves are getting better, in terms of smaller, every day,” Abu-Zaid.

In Ocean City, there are still plenty of reasons to smile in the sun, Buberniak said.

“I’m having a great time. I’m here with family and friends. The weather is beautiful, and most importantly, I’m not at work,” Buberniak said with a laugh.

Surfing with a leash is allowed in Ocean City on Monday, while bodyboarding with fins and flippers is permitted. However, those on foot must refrain from going beyond knee-height. The National Hurricane Center has issued a high rip current risk for the area. Ocean City Police ask everyone to stay out of the water after lifeguards leave the stands at 5:30 p.m.
