MILFORD, Del. – A fatal four-vehicle crash is under investigation in Milford.

On July 11th, around 7:30 a.m., Delaware State Police say a Chevrolet Tahoe and a Chrysler Town and Country minivan were approaching Bakersfield Road from opposite directions on Coastal Highway. A Subaru Forester was traveling behind the minivan, while a Chrysler 200 was traveling in the next lane over behind the Subaru.

Investigators say the Tahoe entered the center median as it went around a curve, rotated, and entered the opposite lanes of the highway. The right front side of the vehicle struck the left front side of the minivan, separating the engine from the Tahoe, according to police. After the crash, police say Forester rear-ended the minivan, and the Chrysler hit the detached engine.

The driver of the Town and Country was identified as Peter Surdo 71-year-old Kennett Square, Pa. man. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 31-year-old Frederica man was identified as the driver of the Tahoe and was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the Forester, identified as a 36-year-old Doylestown, Pa. woman, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 34-year-old Dover woman, the driver of the Chrysler, was not injured.

Coastal Highway was closed for about four hours as the scene was investigated and cleared. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Sergeant A. Mitchell at 302-703-3269.
