Salisbury Union Station revitalization chugging along with new grant from DHCD

SALISBURY, Md. – Progress is chugging along for the Union Station revitalization project in Salisbury.

Recently, Salisbury City Council accepted a Sustainable Communities Fund grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Officials said the $250,000 will help get the former railroad building in shape and safe for people to be inside.

“The goal is to revitalize the building and use it for commercial purposes, but also to further impact that community that definitely needs a refresh,” said Salisbury City Council President D’Shawn Doughty.

Union Station was built in 1913 and was once a travel hub for the Delmarva Peninsula. Now, the dream is to breathe new life into the building and make it a different kind of hub. Doughty said it’s a key part of working to connect the eastern and western sides of Salisbury, which are divided by the railroad tracks.

“Hopefully, this will ignite the fire and passion within this community that is often forgotten. They really need that support. Putting this right here in the Church Street neighborhood is going to bring it up and make it so people feel welcomed. It’s really going to bridge our community and our city together,” Doughty said.

Construction is expected to continue over the next few months. Doughty said city leaders hope to have the project completed by mid-2027.

“You know how development goes, but fingers crossed that everything goes as planned and we can see some real progress with this project, because it’s been a long time coming,” Doughty said.
