Wicomico Co. library system provides update on Pittsville, Parsonsburg branches

PITTSVILLE, Md. – The Wicomico County Public Libraries system provided a community update in Pittsville on the new branch in Parsonsburg on Wednesday night.

Preparing Patrons for Parsonsburg

Library director Seth Hershberger said the organization is working hard to ensure the new location will be ready for patrons this summer.

“In a matter of months we are going to be closing the library in Pittsville that’s right now in a trailer and moving it to a new purpose-designed facility in Parsonsburg,” Hershberger explained.

While Hershberger said the public meeting saw a small turnout, it was still filled with important information.

“We had some questions about the layout of the building, what kind of spaces would be available for families and children, how the library would work to bring them in, and what kind of programming would be available,” Hershberger said.

New Digs, New Opportunities

Currently, crews are working to remove the roof on the building that will become the Parsonsburg branch and install new trusses. Hershberger said the new facility would be larger, better able to handle programming and have a more adequate parking area.

“It’s going to be a beautiful facility that’s going to have a lot of really great space inside where you can just spend time with your family or have a quiet place to get away from your own home and enjoy some time with the community around,” Hershberger said.

It would be a far cry from the limiting space at the current Pittsville branch, Hershberger added.

“Really, it’s just a place to go in and get things you need from the library but don’t spend time in there. That’s what we want to offer in the new location (in Parsonsburg)—a place that belongs to the community, a place that’s home away from home,” Hershberger said.

Hershberger said the library system will provide community updates on the work going forward.

Eyes on Another Big Prize

Meanwhile, library officials are also working to complete the design phase for the downtown Salisbury location’s big move to the former Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art.

“We’re really focused next on the new location in Salisbury. So, we’ve shifted—as far as collecting information from the public about what they want to do with that building, what they’d like to see there,” Hershberger said.
