Mobile family law center gets rolling in Wicomico County, offering free legal advice
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – The Wicomico County library system’s Mobile Learning Center is delivering new resources. Starting Wednesday, the library and the Wicomico County Circuit Court will offer free family law services on the bus.
“(That includes) divorce, modification of custody agreements, name change, all of those types of cases… Not everybody has ready access to transportation. Some people honestly just don’t feel comfortable accessing the courthouse. So, this brings these services to the community,” said Wicomico County Circuit Court administrator Melissa Lahey.
The mobile help center will offer services free of charge, and visit various locations including Sharptown, the Henson Family YMCA and Billy Jean Jackson Boys and Girls Club in Salisbury. Lawyers on the bus can offer free advice, but cannot represent clients in court.
“You should be within ten or 15 minutes of your home and come access those services, which is especially important because more than 90 percent of people in family law cases in Wicomico County do represent themselves,” Lahey said.
The services are also available at the Wicomico County Circuit Court Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Clients may also call and text lawyers for help in the state of Maryland Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, click here or call 410-260-1392.
