WCPS collecting gently used sneakers
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – In Worcester County, schools are in need of sneaker donations.
School officials noticed that kids don’t have the appropriate footwear for gym class which isn’t safe on the gymnasium floor. They say proper footwear is crucial because when you’re younger your feet are still developing and wearing the right shoes can reduce injury by 40%. The Sneakers for Safety Program will provide students with the shoes and then they will return them and disinfect them.
Tamara Mills says the program is to keep students healthy and engaged. “Research in our county through Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey tells us that 25% of Worcester County middle schoolers self-report themselves as overweight, and 15% of our high school students self-report as overweight or obese,” said Tamara Mills, WCPS Coordinator of Instruction.
At the schools you can donate your gently used sneakers in the large donation boxes. When they redo the program they are hoping to supply socks.
Donations can be children-size sneakers up to adults.
