Health officials advise getting children vaccinated ahead of school

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. – School is right around the corner for students across Delmarva.

Before students start school for the first time,  two doses of varicella are necessary. For the older kids, there’s a different series of vaccinations needed. That includes vaccinations like TDAP, which is tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, along with a meningitis vaccine.

WMDT spoke with the Wicomico County Health Department who tells us that there’s a specific time frame to get your child the vaccine, so they aren’t withheld from school.

The department says it’s an effort to keep all students and staff safe. “It’s important for them to be up to date on all their immunizations because it does protect them from a variety of diseases that could be spread in settings like schools. And our goal is to kind of prevent the spread of these illnesses through the vaccination,” said Olivia Butler, the Director of Nursing for the Wicomico Health Department.

The Wicomico County Health Department will be hosting vaccine clinics. Click here for more information.
