MSDE seeking public feedback for draft literacy policy

MARYLAND – A new policy for Maryland education is in the works and the Maryland State Department of Education needs your feedback.

The department drafted a new literacy policy set out to improve outcomes for all students across Maryland. It’s a 13-page document that the department says will ensure a strong foundation in literacy. Children who can not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school compared to proficient readers.

But feedback from community members will help the department better understand how to help those falling behind. “Let us know how you feel about this policy, we want to ensure that children in Maryland are receiving access to high-quality literacy instruction. And the way that we do that is to put parameters in place,”said Dr. Tenette Smith, the Executive Director of Literacy Programs and Initiatives with MSDE.

Dr. Tenette Smith says to make sure your kids are reading at home throughout the summer. Click here for the feedback form.
