Maryland READS looking for improvements in draft literacy policy

MARYLAND – A Maryland non-profit is working to end the literacy crisis across the state.

The Maryland State Department of Education recently released a draft literacy policy that sets out to improve outcomes for all students. Tuesday morning, there was a hearing on what improvements still need to be made. Maryland READS believes the policy needs more answers surrounding the timeline along with more clarity and transparency within the policy.

They also called for clearer modes of support for older students before they get to the point of failing. “A lot more specificity about how they’re going to be supporting middle and high school students. For ten years, we have had a decline in reading proficiency in our state, and an entire generation of students was failed by that. ,” said Trish Brennan-Gac, Executive Directive of Maryland READS.

Maryland READS officials say they are hoping to be able to support the policy once those changes are made. Click here to view the draft policy.
