Pittsville leaders propose real property tax increase
PITTSVILLE, Md. – Pittsville residents could be seeing a real property tax increase, if town commissioners approve it.
Town leaders are proposing an increase from $0.2875 per $100 of real property assessed to $0.30 per $100. Commission President Sean McHugh says that works out to between $10 and $30 more per year, depending on how large a person’s property is.
McHugh says the last several changes to the rate have only brought decreases. Should the currently proposed increase go into effect, McHugh says Pittsville’s property taxes would remain the lowest in Wicomico County.
“The thought process is that costs are going up for everybody, including towns. We have to address that incrementally,” McHugh said. “I believe people can budget for small, incremental increases over time. I’m a taxpayer, myself, and I understand that. But, with costs, and to keep the high level of services that our employees provide to our residents, we felt it was necessary to propose that increase.”
A public hearing on the proposed increase is set for Monday, June 17th at 6 p.m. at Pittsville Town Hall. If you can’t make it out to that meeting, town commissioners encourage you to reach out to them directly with any thoughts or concerns.
